The Cistercian Wall Paintings

Many years ago, before the Reformation, St Mary's was a Catholic Church which was maintained by the Cistercian monks from the Abbey at Stratford Langthorne.

Although an austere order, they painted some unique murals above and underneath the arch between the choir and the sanctuary.

However during the last restoration of the Church, the Cistercian artwork was said to be 'coming away' from the walls. The paintings were therefore covered with lime wash to preserve them, leaving some small 'windows' in the coating to show what lies beneath.

With grants from English Heritage, the lime wash has very carefully been scraped away to reveal these important paintings. Click on the pictures to see a larger version
