Mary Magdalene

Mary Magdalene
St Mary Magdalene is the patron saint of the Church. Saint Mary Magdalene was the women from whom Jesus cast out seven demons. She is mentioned in the Gospels as being one of the women who supported Jesus and his disciples. She was also present at his crucifixion and burial.

On Easter Sunday, the Gospels record that Mary Magdalene went to the tomb where Jesus was buried to anoint his body with precious ointment. When she arrived she found that the stone covering the tomb had been rolled away and that the body of Jesus had gone. Mary Magdalene was the first person to see the resurrected Christ, and was sent to announce this to the disciples.

(You can find the passage relating to these events in John 20: 11 - 18). The feast day of St Mary Magdalene is 22nd July and the church has special services, to mark the patronal celebrations. This figure stands to the left of the sanctuary entrance, and is Flemish in origin. She carries in her right hand the box of precious ointment.
