The Windows

In the walls are two small Norman windows and the remains of a third. Originally the Norman windows were unglazed and might or might not have been stopped up to keep out the weather. They were placed high and kept small for the sake of security . Although the wide splay admits as much light as possible the original church must have been very dark. This was a small matter in the days when so few had books or could read.

In the early nineteenth century four large windows were put in and three Norman windows were destroyed in the process. These windows were glazed with beautiful stained glass, but all the glass was lost when a bomb landed near the church during the Blitz. All we have left are some black and white photographs of what they used to look like.
