The Pews and Pulpit

The pulpit is a special raised platform where the priest stands to preach the sermon to the congregation. The present pulpit and pews date from the first decade of this century. They replaced the old three-decked pulpit and box pews and were bought for the grand sum of £300.

Approximately half-way along the aisle of the Church are placed the church warden 'prickers'. These two 'prickers' pictured here are dated 1805, and look like snooker cues. They were used many years ago, to wake up people who who fell asleep during the long sermons of the nineteenth century.

The present pews have electrically heated panels. This replaced the previous form of heating which was a stove placed at the back of the Church. However in the last century, the Church was heated by a number of open fires, each having their own flues cut into the walls of the Church.
