The Paschal Candle

The Paschal Candle is a special candle with its own stand that is lit at the beginning of the Paschal vigil on the evening of Easter Saturday. At St. Mary's each year there is a special service in the Church for the lighting of the candle.

During the Paschal service, after a blessing of the New Fire, the Priest marks the candle with the sign of the Cross, the Greek letters 'Alpha' and 'Omega' and the date of the year. Five grains of incense, representing Christ's wounds are pressed into the candle which is then lit from the New Fire.

The Paschal candle, once lit, does not get extinguished until after the Gospel on Ascension Day,

(the day when Jesus Christ ascended into heaven, forty days after Easter). The Paschal Candle symbolizes Christ rising from the dead and the Light of the World. At baptismal ceremonies, small candles are lit from the Paschal candle and given to the children.
